Franziska Cooiman

I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Social Sciences at Humboldt University Berlin. I am also a member of the platform economies research network based at the New School for Social Research, a board member of the Center for Emancipatory Technology Studies, and on the editorial board of the newly founded journal Platforms & Society.

I study finance, platform economies, industrial policy, ecological transformation(s), and everything in between, mostly focusing on Europe. My work is interdisciplinary, spanning economic sociology, political economy, and science & technology studies.

I completed my Ph.D. on venture capital in Europe in 2023 at Roskilde University and WZB Berlin Social Science Center. I was a Visiting Scholar at the Politics Department of the New School for Social Research in New York and a research  fellow at the Weizenbaum Institute.

Before academia, I worked in finance, as an M&A analyst at J.P. Morgan, and in the digital economy, as a business developer at Rocket Internet, experiencing the world of my research subjects firsthand.

My research was supported by the Danish research ministry with the EliteForsk travel grant and by the German Research Council (DFG) as a member of an early career research network and has been recognized with the Karl Polanyi Price by the German Socioloy Association in 2024 and the Egon-Matzner-Award for Socio-Economics in 2022.
